چکیده
Ghostly Stellar Halos in Dwarf Galaxies Hoyoung Kang Department of Physics, University of Maryland Our study aims at probing the typical masses of the smallest and faintest galaxies that have ever formed in the universe. We carry out numerical simulations to characterize the size, stellar mass, and stellar mass surface density of stellar halos as a function of dark matter halo mass and a parameter that dictates the amount of stellar mass. We expect that for galaxies smaller than a critical value, these ghostly halos will not exist because the smaller galactic subunits that build it up, do not form any stars. Our results indicate the introduced parameter dominates the behaviors of stellar halos over dark matter mass. This indicates finding the appropriate parameter value is crucial to characterize these halos. We also find redshift contributes to the behavior of stellar mass but has no significant impact on the size of stellar halos.

Giant Halos in Dwarf Irregular Galaxies vs. Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies
We present a discovery of a giant stellar halo in NGC 6822, a dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. This halo is mostly made of old red giants, showing striking features: 1) it is several times larger than the main body of the galaxy seen in the optical images, and 2) it is elongated in the direction almost perpendicular to the HI disk of NGC 6822. The structure of this stellar halo looks ...
متن کاملGlobular Clusters and the Halos of Dwarf Galaxies
Many dwarf galaxies have disproportionately rich globular cluster (GC) systems for their luminosities. Moreover, the GCs tend to be preferentially associated with the most metal-poor stellar populations in their parent galaxies, making them attractive tracers of the halos of dwarf (and larger) galaxies. In this contribution, I briefly discuss some constraints on cluster disruption obtained from...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملOn the Formation of Extended Galactic Disks by Tidally Disrupted Dwarf Galaxies
We explore the possibility that extended disks, such as that recently discovered in M31, are the result of a single dwarf (10–10M⊙) satellite merger. We conduct N-body simulations of dwarf NFW halos with embedded spheriodal stellar components on co-planar, prograde orbits in a M31-like host galaxy. As the orbit decays due to dynamical friction and the system is disrupted, the stellar particles ...
متن کاملDwarf Galaxy Rotation Curves and the Core Problem of Dark Matter Halos
The standard cold dark matter (CDM) model has recently been challenged by the claim that dwarf galaxies have dark matter halos with constant density cores, whereas CDM predicts halos with steeply cusped density distributions. Consequently, numerous alternative dark matter candidates have recently been proposed. In this paper, we scrutinize the observational evidence for the incongruity between ...
